When to spay or neuter a Rottweiler

Neutering age as a trade between two measured risks in this breed, with the cohort size next to every percentage, never as a universal rule.

Most health questions in this breed are read out of a dog: a radiograph returns a grade, a cardiologist returns a word, an eye certificate returns a date. Alteration runs the other way. It is the one major health decision a household makes before anything can be read, and it is made on a calendar. In a breed where the joint and cancer findings are as specific as they are, the calendar deserves better than the general advice written for dogs of every size, which is what most pages on the subject offer. This one holds the question against the two studies that cover the breed itself, reports what they measure with the group sizes beside every percentage, and marks the line where the data stops and the conversation with a veterinarian starts.

Two risks that move in opposite directions

The trade the calendar offers is between two families of risk, and the two do not answer to the same lever. The joint side is measured in the breed’s own cohort: a 2020 study from the University of California, Davis, published in an open access veterinary journal, follows 854 Rottweilers in its breed section and reports joint disorders in 8 percent of its intact males and 16 percent of its intact females, figures that read as high for dogs that were never operated on at all. The cancer side moves with the calendar instead, and its breed specific measurement is older, taken up in its own section below. One risk shifts with the age of alteration; the other is already substantial before any decision is taken. That is why a single rule for this breed reads badly, and why the joint side of the trade is developed on its own page in hip and elbow dysplasia. What the breed cohort reports for males

For males, the study’s group of 315 intact dogs carries the joint figure of 8 percent, and the group of 152 neutered dogs is there to be read against it. What makes the male side of the question distinctive is how much of it is already written before the calendar is consulted: a share of the study’s dogs reached joint disorders with their reproductive anatomy untouched, which is the finding that keeps the whole question honest. Alteration is a trade between risks rather than a protection against one of them, and on the joint side the risk exists before any surgery takes place. The study ends its breed section with guidance on the age of alteration, given sex by sex, and that guidance belongs to its authors. This page carries the measurements and leaves the recommendation where the data keeps it, because a recommendation transcribed without its group sizes is the first step back toward a rule the breed’s own figures do not support.

What it reports for females

The female rows are the ones that change the conversation in most households, because the joint figure doubles: 16 percent of the 143 intact females, against 8 percent of the intact males. Whatever the calendar decides, the sex of the dog has already moved the joint line, and a household weighing the surgery for joint reasons reads that figure first. It is also the finding that most general neutering advice does not carry, because general advice is written across breeds and this figure belongs to one breed. The spayed group of 239 is the study’s largest, and it is grouped by the age at alteration, which is what allows the study to say anything about timing at all. The bone sarcoma finding, and its date

The study that carries the cancer side of this trade is older, and it is dated every time it is quoted for a reason. A 2002 cohort of 683 North American Rottweilers, published in a cancer epidemiology journal, reported that dogs of both sexes gonadectomized before their first year had roughly a one in four lifetime risk of bone sarcoma, higher than the risk in intact dogs, and that the risk fell as the length of hormone exposure rose: a dose response that runs in one direction across the whole cohort. No later study of the same size covers the breed alone, which is why a paper of that vintage stays the reference here. Its date is part of the finding. The dogs in it lived in a particular North America, under the veterinary practice of their own decade, and a figure that old is a load bearing beam in one wall of the argument rather than the whole house.

An adult dog that arrives already altered

Most adopters of an adult Rottweiler inherit this decision already made, and the inheritance deserves to be read calmly. The calendar question is closed; the health questions it does not answer remain open, and they are the ones an adult dog can still be examined for. An alteration date in a record is also information. It tells the household where the dog stood on the calendar the day the decision was taken, which is the detail the two studies above weigh, and it is worth writing down with the rest of the file rather than reading backward as a judgment on whoever made it. Adopting an adult dog takes the whole inheritance in hand, from the first afternoon to the end of the first month, and the examinations that remain open belong on the same list as the rest of the dog’s paperwork.

The conversation to have with your veterinarian

The decision belongs to a household and its veterinarian, and the conversation goes better when the household arrives with the breed’s numbers rather than with a rule of thumb collected from a general page. Three things are worth carrying in. The two studies above, named with their years and their group sizes, because they are the breed specific measurement and the person across the table is entitled to know which figures a household is leaning on. The dog’s own certification ages, because the calendar of the operation and the calendar of the examinations read together: a hip certification becomes definitive at 24 months or older, a cardiac clearance at two years or older, and the screening table lists each exam with the age it becomes final. And the risk this decision moves the most, laid out with its cohort and its date in bone cancer. What a household should expect back from the conversation is not a verdict but a plan with a date on it, and the date is the whole point of asking.

Misreadings around the calendar

  • A percentage without its group size invites a bad generalization. Every percentage on this page carries the number of dogs it was measured in.
  • The published groups and the published total are quoted exactly as the study prints them, and no figure here is derived by addition. The study constitutes its subgroups its own way.
  • The 2002 finding is about dogs altered before their first year. It is a finding about a group and an age, and nothing in it transfers to an individual dog by itself.
  • A certification age is a floor for reading a radiograph, never a deadline for surgery. The two dates answer different questions and sit on the same calendar.

Between the two studies, the breed’s own figures say something more useful than a rule: they say which risks move with the calendar and which do not, and they print their group sizes so a household can see how much dog stands behind each percentage. The rest is a date, a sex and a conversation.
